About this role
Highland Animal Hospital Externship Program
Hands-on learning. Real-world experience. A community invested in your success.
THIS EXTERNSHIP ISN’T FOR EVERYONE. But it might be exactly what you’re looking for.
If your highest priority after graduation is working the fewest hours possible, Highland Animal Hospital is probably not the right fit for you.
If your goal is to become an exceptional veterinarian as quickly as possible, keep reading.
Our philosophy is simple:
The fastest way to become an exceptional veterinarian is through repetition, mentorship, and a high-quality, high-volume caseload.
We believe you can work hard without sacrificing quality of medicine or quality of patient care.
The investment you make in your first few years can pay dividends for the rest of your career.
We’re looking for a specific type of veterinarian.
Someone who…
• Wants to become outstanding - not just competent.
• Is excited to work hard early in their career.
• Wants honest feedback and coaching.
• Wants to maximize every opportunity to learn.
• Understands that today’s effort becomes tomorrow’s confidence.
If that doesn’t sound like you, that’s okay.
We’re intentionally looking for a small number of students who share this philosophy.
Fourth-Year Veterinary Student Externship
Two-week externship - If your rotations are a different length, we may still be able to accommodate you.
This externship is designed for fourth-year veterinary students who are still exploring where they want to begin their careers.
For us, it’s an opportunity to mentor you and get to know you.
For you, it’s an opportunity to determine whether Highland Animal Hospital is the place you want to launch your career.
Travel expenses and housing provided. (Details available upon request.)
Learn Faster.
Because You’ll See More.
Last year Highland Animal Hospital had:
· Approximately 32,000 patient visits
· Approximately 2,200 surgeries
· We currently perform approximately 88 dental procedures every month
- We currently perform approximately 30 TPLO surgeries every month
That volume means something.
· It means opportunities to see disease processes repeatedly.
· It means opportunities to improve clinical judgment.
- It means learning from real patients - not just textbooks.
Learn From Experienced Mentors
You’ll work alongside four senior veterinarians with more than 60 years of combined clinical experience.
Our goal is to help you become a confident clinician who can think independently while always putting patients first.
You’ll receive:
• Direct mentorship
• Frequent case discussions
• Surgical exposure
• Progressive responsibility appropriate for your experience
This isn’t just an externship - It’s a two-week interview for both of us. We encourage you to evaluate us just as carefully as we evaluate you.
Our hope is that, if we’re the right fit for one another, your externship becomes the beginning of your career - not the end of your clinical year.
