About Us – Christchurch City Mission

The Christchurch City Mission (Te Whare Mīhana Ki Ōtautahi) helps anyone in need, no matter their situation. We work alongside people going through tough times—whether it’s due to job loss, housing issues, addiction, family difficulties, or financial stress.

We respond to both immediate crises and long-term challenges. Our services aim to build confidence, dignity, and skills so people can live independently and feel proud of themselves. We've seen lives change with our support and firmly believe everyone deserves compassion, support, and a second chance.

Our Op Shops play an important role in this kaupapa. They provide affordable pre-loved goods, reduce waste, create meaningful volunteering and work-readiness opportunities, and help fund the Mission’s services for local people and whānau. This casual role is based at our Barbadoes Street Op Shop.

About the role

We are looking for a practical, reliable and people-focused team member to join our team as a Casual Op Shop Assistant / Furniture Removalist. • Safely load, unload and move furniture and other donated items
  • Build positive and respectful relationships with donors, clients, customers, volunteers and team members

About you

You will enjoy working with people, be comfortable with physical and practical tasks, and bring a positive, respectful approach to everyone you meet. You will also be reliable, organised and able to work safely in a busy retail and delivery environment.

  • Retail, customer service, Op Shop, warehousing or stock-handling experience
  • Confidence with POS systems, cash handling, pricing and restocking
  • Good physical fitness and the ability to safely lift and move furniture and bulky items
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, professional manner
