Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team

The Neurogenetic Research Clinic, part of the Centre for Brain Research, is a leading centre for clinical research in rare neurological disorders. Our work spans international clinical trials, natural history studies and translational research aimed at improving diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for people living with inherited neurological conditions.

Our multidisciplinary team is led by Associate Professor Richard Roxburgh, Consultant Neurologist, and includes neurophysiologists, research nurses, physiotherapists, genetic counsellors and study coordinators.

Participant assessments are conducted at Clinical Research Centre (Building 507, Grafton) for research in collaboration with international partners and pharmaceutical sponsors.

Current projects include:

• Phase 3 clinical trials for focal epilepsy (tablets) and myotonic dystrophy (infusion).
• Observational studies to validate clinical outcome measures, characterise phenotypes and identify biomarkers.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking a motivated doctor to join our team as a Sub-Investigator on a casual basis. This is a varied and engaging role that offers the opportunity to advance your clinical research career by contributing to cutting-edge clinical research, improving the lives of people living with rare disorders, and developing expertise in neurological assessment.

Following training in specific neurological tests, the role will involve conducting assessments following study protocols, including (but not limited to):

• Obtaining informed consent and conducting participant eligibility assessments.
• Taking medical histories and reviewing concomitant medications.
• Performing protocol-specific physical and neurological examinations.
• Conducting and documenting study assessments in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
• Monitoring participant safety, including review of laboratory results and ECGs.
• Communicating clinically relevant findings with participants and their healthcare providers.
• Performing protocol-specific procedures where trained and required including (but not limited to) venepuncture, rating scales (requiring certification) and common/bespoke study software.
• Collaborating with study coordinators, allied health professionals and international research partners.
• Maintaining GCP qualifications and any other qualifications required for studies.
• Responding to queries raised by study monitors.

For clinical trials, additional tasks include:

• Checking investigational products (IPs) and supervising administration where required.
• Responding to concerns raised by the Research Nurse that arise during IP infusion including being available to attend emergency calls.
• Judging whether events are Adverse Events or Serious Adverse reactions and taking appropriate management decisions to ensure participant’s wellbeing.

Our ideal candidate will bring:

Essential

• Current registration and practising certificate with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
• Minimum three years' postgraduate clinical experience.
• Excellent clinical assessment and communication skills.
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Current professional indemnity insurance and up to date CPR.

Desirable

• Experience in General Practice or Neurology.
• Interest in or experience with clinical research.
• Current GCP certification.
• Experience with neurological examination and assessment.
• Experience working with people living with chronic neurological disorders.
