Job Overview
The Cataloging Assistant is primarily responsible for cataloging and metadata creation for materials in all formats (print, electronic, online, multimedia) in various languages and subject areas for the Law Library. Reporting to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata, this position is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of metadata in the Law Library’s catalog and digital repositories to ensure their accuracy and reliability. Job responsibilities include applying metadata to digital collections, original and copy cataloging for monographs, serials, rare books and materials from Special Collections, and the maintenance of OCLC local holding data for serial titles. The Cataloging Assistant frequently carries out special projects or other assigned duties to adapt to the changing needs of the department and the Law Library. Additional duties may include special tasks or projects to keep the department operating efficiently and effectively.
Work Interactions
Under the supervision of the Head of Cataloging and Metadata, work is performed according to priorities set by the Department Head and within established departmental guidelines and procedures. This position also works closely with staff from Access Services, Collection Development, Digital Initiatives, Special Collections, and Acquisitions to carry out special projects as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma
- 3-5 years of library experience
- Knowledge of standard academic library practices and procedures.
- Familiarity with spreadsheet, database, and cloud-based document storage applications.
- Ability to work as part of a team in a complex and changing environment.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Experience with cataloging tools and standards (e.g. OCLC Connexion, RDA, LC Classification, LC Subject Headings)
- Familiarity with law and/or legal materials.
- One year of cataloging experience, preferably in an academic setting.
- Experience with a library services platform, such as Ex Libris Alma.
- Flexibility to take on new responsibilities and projects as needed.

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$19.20 - $28.70Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
