The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support services to patients and healthcare providers within Valle del Sol's integrated healthcare environment. Under the supervision of a licensed provider, the Medical Assistant assists with patient intake, vital signs, specimen collection, medication administration, documentation, care coordination, patient education, and other clinical support functions necessary to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.
Using a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and patient-centered approach, the Medical Assistant supports quality patient outcomes, promotes continuity of care, and contributes to the delivery of high-quality healthcare services across primary care, behavioral health, psychiatry, addiction medicine, and other clinical service lines.
Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures by obtaining and documenting vital signs, chief complaints, medical histories, and other relevant information.
- Prepare examination and treatment rooms for patient visits and clinical procedures.
- Assist providers during examinations, treatments, and office-based procedures.
- Perform specimen collection, processing, and testing in accordance with established protocols.
- Provide patients with instructions regarding specimen collection, treatment plans, medications, and follow-up care.
- Administer medications, immunizations, injections, and other delegated clinical tasks in accordance with scope of practice, competency validation, standing orders, and organizational policies.
- Monitor patients and communicate changes in patient condition to the appropriate provider.
- Support care coordination activities including referrals, authorizations, laboratory testing, and specialty care follow-up.
- Assist with patient outreach, preventive care initiatives, quality measures, and population health activities.
Documentation & Compliance
- Accurately document patient information, treatments, procedures, and communications within the electronic health record.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
- Follow infection prevention, medication management, laboratory, and patient safety standards.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, accreditation, payer, and organizational requirements.
- Support quality improvement initiatives, audits, and performance improvement activities.
Clinic Operations & Workflow Support
- Maintain exam rooms, treatment areas, supplies, equipment, and inventory.
- Clean, disinfect, and prepare equipment according to infection control standards.
- Monitor inventory levels and notify leadership regarding supply needs.
- Assist with clinic opening, closing, and daily operational activities.
- Support efficient patient flow and scheduling processes.
Communication & Team Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, providers, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Collaborate with clinical and operational staff to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and organizational initiatives.
- Promote a positive patient experience through professional, respectful, and compassionate interactions.
Other Duties
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation in accordance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Maintains the confidentiality and security of patient, employee, and organizational information in accordance with HIPAA and Valle del Sol policies.
- Promotes a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors by following safety policies, infection control practices, and quality standards.
- Performs duties in accordance with Valle del Sol policies, procedures, ethical standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Supports Valle del Sol's mission and commitment to culturally responsive care.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
CAREER LEVELS
Medical Assistant I
- 0–2 years of applied medical assisting experience.
- Develops proficiency in clinical workflows, patient care support, documentation, and organizational procedures.
- Performs routine duties with guidance and support as needed.
Medical Assistant II
- 2–5 years of applied medical assisting experience.
- Demonstrates proficiency across clinical operations and patient care support functions.
- Functions independently in most routine situations.
- Serves as a resource for less experienced staff members.
Medical Assistant III
- 5+ years of applied medical assisting experience.
- Demonstrates advanced competency across clinical operations and patient care support functions.
- Serves as a mentor and resource to other Medical Assistants.
- Supports onboarding, training, workflow improvement initiatives, and special projects as assigned.
PROGRAM-SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Care
- Support family medicine, pediatrics, women's health, and primary care services.
- Assist with preventive care, chronic disease management, immunizations, screenings, and routine procedures.
- Support UDS measures, population health initiatives, and care gap closure activities.
Psychiatry Services
- Support psychiatric providers with patient intake, medication monitoring, vital signs, documentation, and care coordination.
- Assist with medication administration, injections, laboratory coordination, and patient education.
- Support behavioral health and integrated care workflows.
Addiction Medicine / OTP
- Support addiction medicine and medication-assisted treatment services.
- Assist with specimen collection, medication administration, laboratory testing, and patient monitoring.
- Support coordination between behavioral health, medical, nursing, and recovery support services.
- Assist with program-specific documentation and regulatory requirements.
Float Assignment
- Provide coverage across multiple Valle del Sol clinic locations, programs, and service lines based on operational needs.
- Adapt to varying workflows, providers, patient populations, and clinic environments.
- Travel between assigned locations as needed.
- Support continuity of operations during vacancies, leaves, training periods, and fluctuations in staffing levels.
- May be assigned to Primary Care, Psychiatry Services, Addiction Medicine, or other clinical service lines.
- Reliable transportation required for employees assigned to Float positions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Graduation from an approved Medical Assistant training program.
Preferred:
- Associate degree in a healthcare-related field.
