TITLE: Algebra-1 Teacher

REPORTS TO: Principal

STATUS: Part-time

POSITION SUMMARY:

The part-time Algebra 1 Teacher provides standards-aligned instruction to a small group of advanced 8th-grade students at Oceanside Adventist Elementary. The teacher develops students’ mathematical reasoning and prepares them for high school coursework while supporting the school’s Christ-centered mission and L.O.V.E. values.

MISSION ALIGNMENT

The Algebra 1 Teacher supports the mission of Seventh-day Adventist education by helping students develop academically, personally, and spiritually while preparing them for continued success in high school and beyond.

The teacher will:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following list is representative and not exhaustive. Additional responsibilities related to the position may be assigned by the principal.

Instruction & Curriculum

• Plan and deliver engaging Algebra 1 instruction aligned with applicable mathematics standards and the school’s adopted curriculum.
• Provide appropriately rigorous instruction for advanced 8th-grade students who have demonstrated readiness for high-school-level mathematics.
• Teach and reinforce key Algebra 1 concepts, including expressions, equations and inequalities, functions, linear relationships, systems, exponents, polynomials, and quadratic relationships
  Develop students’ mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and ability to communicate their mathematical thinking.
• Use a variety of instructional strategies, examples, applications, and technology to make abstract mathematical concepts accessible.
• Differentiate instruction and provide additional support or challenge based on individual student needs.
• Prepare students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for continued high school mathematics coursework

Assessment & Student Progress

• Develop and administer appropriate assessments to measure student understanding and mastery of Algebra 1 standards.
• Utilize the school’s Standards-Based Learning approach to assess and communicate student progress.
• Provide timely, meaningful feedback that helps students understand their current level of proficiency and next steps for growth.
• Maintain accurate student records and enter grades/proficiency data into the school’s electronic gradebook in a timely manner.
• Communicate concerns, progress, and successes with students, families, and school administration as appropriate.

Classroom Environment

• Establish a focused, respectful, and academically challenging classroom environment.
• Maintain clear expectations and routines that maximize instructional time.
• Encourage students to take ownership of their learning and develop independence as advanced mathematics students.
• Manage student behavior consistently and professionally in accordance with school expectations.
• Ensure the physical and emotional safety of students during instructional time

Collaboration & Communication

• Maintain regular communication with school administration regarding student progress, curriculum pacing, and instructional needs.
• Communicate professionally and effectively with parents or guardians when needed.
• Collaborate with other teachers and staff to support students’ overall academic success.
• Coordinate instructional pacing and student placement needs with administration

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled instructional periods.
• Maintain accurate lesson plans, assessments, grades, and student records.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information.
• Follow all applicable school, conference, and legal policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, flexibility, and strong communication.
• Participate in meetings or professional conversations directly related to Algebra 1 students and programming as needed.
• Perform other responsibilities directly related to the Algebra 1 program as assigned by the principal.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Strong knowledge of Algebra 1 and foundational secondary mathematics required.
• Teaching credential or mathematics-related educational background preferred.
• Must be an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and be able to provide current church membership information.
• Ability to support and uphold the beliefs, mission, and educational philosophy of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Oceanside Adventist Elementary.

• Ability to clearly explain complex concepts in multiple ways.
• Ability to challenge advanced students while identifying and addressing gaps in understanding.

• Organized, dependable, and able to independently plan and manage instruction.
• Comfortable using educational technology for instruction, assessment, and record keeping.
• Ability to build positive relationships with middle school students while maintaining high academic expectations.

SCHEDULE

• This is a part-time position requiring approximately 4–5 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, during the regular school day.
• The specific daily instructional schedule will be coordinated with school administration based on the school’s master schedule.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment includes classrooms, playgrounds, offices, and other school facilities. The noise level is typically moderate to high due to the active nature of an early childhood program.
