About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on Prototype Design Specialist to support the development of high-quality physical prototypes, models, and mockups for packaging and product development. This role sits at the intersection of industrial design, modelmaking, fabrication, and prototyping, working closely with designers and project teams to translate design concepts into physical form. This lab, run by WovenWorks, is situated inside one of the biggest food companies in North America.

The ideal candidate is both creative and technical, with strong workshop and fabrication skills and an interest in design. You will work with 2D and 3D printing, CAD, hand fabrication, finishing, painting, thermoforming, and other prototyping techniques while also supporting the operation and maintenance of the prototyping lab.

Core Responsibilities

Prototyping & Modelmaking

• Build high-quality physical prototypes, models, and comprehensive mockups based on design concepts, CAD, and artwork.
• Operate and support 2D and 3D printing, rapid prototyping, and fabrication processes.
• Perform hand fabrication, assembly, finishing, painting, and color matching.
• Support thermoforming, casting, and other fabrication processes as required.
• Translate design intent into accurate, production-ready physical prototypes.

Design & CAD Support

• Collaborate with industrial designers and project teams to develop and execute physical concepts.
• Interpret CAD files, drawings, and design documentation to determine appropriate fabrication approaches.
• Develop and apply CAD skills to support packaging and product development.
• Support concept development through physical modeling, sketching, and visualization.

Workshop & Equipment

• Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain prototyping, fabrication, printing, and workshop equipment.
• Perform basic maintenance and repairs to maintain lab reliability and minimize downtime.
• Support equipment setup, calibration, and continuous improvement of workshop processes.
• Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and project-ready workshop environment.
• Coordinate with vendors and leadership when equipment requires external service or support.
• Run safety and training groups and ensure our facility is EHS compliant

Collaboration & Project Support

• Work closely with designers, engineers, and project leads to meet project objectives and deadlines.
• Communicate technical considerations, project progress, and fabrication challenges clearly.
• Manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
• Maintain a high standard of craftsmanship, accuracy, and consistency across all work.
• Network and collaborate with two other prototyping labs in the WovenWorks organization.

What You Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 2–5+ years of experience in industrial design, modelmaking, prototyping, fabrication, or a related field.
• Strong hands-on experience with physical modelmaking and fabrication.
• Experience with 2D/3D printing and rapid prototyping.
• Working knowledge of 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Rhino, or similar.
• Experience with workshop tools, woodworking, machining, thermoforming, or casting is a plus.
• Experience with painting, finishing, and color matching is a plus.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Comfortable working in a hands-on workshop environment and learning new equipment and processes.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Self-directed, organized, and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
