Social Worker

Make a meaningful difference in your community

At Christchurch City Mission | Te Whare Mīhana Ki Ōtautahi, we walk alongside people facing some of life's toughest challenges, offering practical support, compassionate care, and hope.

We're looking for an experienced, compassionate Registered Social Worker to join our team. This is an opportunity to work with a diverse range of individuals and whānau experiencing housing instability, financial hardship, mental health challenges, addiction, social isolation, family disruption, and other complex life circumstances.

If you're passionate about relationship-based practice, thrive in a dynamic environment, and want to make a genuine difference in people's lives, we'd love to hear from you.

About Christchurch City Mission

Christchurch City Mission supports people and whānau across Canterbury who are experiencing hardship and vulnerability. Guided by our values and Christian ethos, we provide practical assistance, social work support, housing services, emergency accommodation, and community programmes that help people move towards greater stability, wellbeing, and independence.

Joining the Mission means becoming part of a dedicated, values-driven organisation where your work has a real and lasting impact on the lives of others.

About the Role

This is a varied and rewarding role that combines crisis intervention, advocacy, assessment, case management, and longer-term support.

As a Social Worker, you will work alongside individuals and whānau accessing services across the Mission, helping them navigate immediate challenges while supporting sustainable positive outcomes.

Social Workers provide support across the Mission's services, including:

  • Duty (drop-in) social work services
  • Night Shelters
  • Day Programmes
  • Transitional Housing

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week), worked Monday to Friday. The role includes some evening work supporting clients staying in our Night Shelters, with hours arranged across the working week.

No two days are the same. One moment you may be supporting someone in crisis, the next advocating with housing providers, collaborating with health and community agencies, or helping a client take the next step towards achieving their goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment, case management, crisis intervention, advocacy, and follow-up support
  • Deliver social work support across the Mission's services, including duty social work, Night Shelters, Day Programmes, and Transitional Housing
  • Support clients experiencing complex social, housing, financial, health, and wellbeing challenges
  • Work collaboratively with clients, whānau, community organisations, and government agencies
  • Maintain accurate case notes, records, and reporting in line with professional standards
  • Contribute to a strengths-based, client-centred, and culturally responsive practice environment

What You'll Bring

We're looking for someone who can confidently work alongside people facing complex challenges while maintaining a compassionate, respectful, and professional approach.

You will have:

  • Registration with the Social Workers Registration Board and a current Annual Practising Certificate
  • Experience in case management and working with people experiencing complex needs
  • Strong assessment, crisis intervention, advocacy, and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • A strengths-based and culturally responsive approach to social work practice
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and working effectively with Māori
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Alignment with the Mission's values and Christian ethos

Experience in homelessness, housing, community social work, mental health, addiction, or crisis services will be highly regarded.

Salary and Benefits

We recognise the value of experienced social work practice.

This position is remunerated in accordance with the Social Workers Pay Equity Pay Scale, with a salary range of $68,037.77 to $102,000 per annum, depending on qualifications, experience, and skills.

In addition, we offer:

  • A wellbeing allowance
  • A paid day off for your birthday
  • Professional supervision and development opportunities
  • A supportive and collaborative team environment
  • The opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of people in our community

Our Commitment to Inclusion

We are committed to creating a workplace where people feel welcomed, respected, and supported to be themselves. We encourage applications from people of diverse backgrounds and are happy to discuss any access requirements throughout the recruitment process.
