Transportation Safety Planner or Engineer | Washington D.C. | Hybrid

This position is for a Transportation Safety Planner/Engineer. In this role, you will be part of the Metro DC team and, more specifically, reporting to the VHB office in Washington, DC. The selected candidate will support our clients’ efforts to plan, design, and analyze new and improved transportation facilities that support and enhance mobility for all transportation modes while reducing crashes, saving lives, and preventing injuries.

Responsibilities

• Work within a team of professionals in developing transportation engineering, safety, and planning solutions for multimodal transportation projects
• Develop creative solutions to address challenging safety and mobility problems in urban, suburban, and rural environments
• Conduct multimodal safety transportation analyses, including both network -wide and individual corridor or intersection safety and improvement studies
• Conduct research, prepare reports, and present findings and results to clients, including both taking on a leadership role and also supporting other team members in the development
• Be able to lead and interpret data analysis and perform national-level state-of-the-practice and literature reviews
• Assist in the development of proposals and scopes of work, track project budgets, and manage tasks
• Work within a team of professionals to develop transportation planning and engineering solutions for a multitude of multimodal transportation projects, including the development of conceptual designs
• Participate in and lead field data collection and other on-site project support activities
• Facilitate meetings and prepare detailed meeting notes
• Monitor and update client facing project coordination sites
• Prepare technical presentations and materials to support public, stakeholder, or client meetings (in-person and virtual)
• Conduct transportation planning and scoping analyses
• Work with Federal, state, and local clients on identifying and applying best practices and the development of guidance documents and other publications
• Maintain a client-service approach to deliver projects that exceed client expectations
• Provide mentorship to junior staff
• Be able to lead client and stakeholder meetings, client workshops, and public meetings
• Prepare written documents, summarize data, and assemble technical reports
• Work within a team of professionals in developing transportation engineering, safety, and planning solutions for multimodal transportation projects

• Understanding of highway safety fundamentals, including behavioral safety factors, and safety treatments
• Ability to understand and interpret traffic engineering analysis
• Has Road Safety Audit (RSA) experience
• Experience with state DOT planning, design, and/or safety work

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional transportation engineering and/or planning experience, preferably in a consulting environment, required
• Strong interest and foundation in safety and multimodal transportation
• BS or MS in Civil Engineering, Planning, or related field
• PE or AICP expected
• Experience with MicroStation/AutoCAD, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Experience with multimodal analysis
• Familiarity with national and/or local transportation engineering standards, including VDOT, AASHTO, MUTCD, Highway Capacity Manual, Highway Safety Manual and/or ITE guidance documents

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $135,000 if located in the DC Metro area. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB’s Total Rewards package. In addition to base pay, eligible employees may receive annual incentive compensation bonuses, spot bonuses, and merit-based salary increases, providing opportunities to increase earnings beyond base pay.
