Senior Backend Engineer

SCOPE OF ROLE:

As a Senior Backend Engineer (Team Lead), you will lead the backend engineering function for Misan by Bamboo, taking full ownership of the API that powers our business across remittance, virtual USD card, cross-border payment platform across our different countries, and new product lines. You will own architecture decisions, mentor the mid-level engineers, and act as the primary technical counterpart to Mobile, Web, and QA engineers. You will use your understanding of programming tools and languages to analyze existing codebase, formulate more efficient processes, solve problems and create a fantastic experience for users. You will bring payments industry expertise to the team, define specifications, participate in weekly team syncs, manage roadmaps, ensure safe, scalable, and efficient payment processing, and prioritize development capacity. Your role is central to ensuring the Misan app releases are high-quality and support our markets and customers.

What you will be doing:

• Own end-to-end backend architecture, including transfer/ledger design, provider integrations, and multi-currency logic across all countries we support.

• Regularly auditing the existing codebase for technical debt, security gaps, and compliance risks.

• Design and enforce idempotency, reconciliation, and audit-trail standards for all money-movement flows (remittances, virtual card transactions, FX conversions).

• Mentor and technically direct the mid-level engineers; review PRs, pair on complex problems, and set coding and architecture standards for the team.

• Partner closely with Mobile and Web engineers to design clean, versioned API contracts that support mobile and web clients consumption.

• Own API security and PCI DSS-aligned practices, and ensure backend systems meet FINTRAC compliance requirements.

• Work with Product Managers and Designers for project definition, technical specification, task break-down, delivery, monitoring, and maintenance.

• Work with QA to define test strategy for payment-critical flows, including automated regression coverage for transfers and reconciliation.

• Manage database schema evolution, queue architecture (webhooks, notifications, provider retries), and caching strategy.

• Own incident response for backend production issues, including root-cause analysis and post-mortems.

• Champion the secure and pragmatic adoption of AI within the backend team's workflows to drive faster, higher-quality delivery, ensuring any AI-assisted development strictly adheres to Misan's data sovereignty and platform security standards.

Who You Are

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience, with meaningful time in fintech, payments, or another regulated, high-trust domain.

• Deep hands-on expertise in PHP/Laravel, including Eloquent, queues, events, and API design (REST/JSON). Experience with Go programming language is a plus.

• You have designed or maintained ledger/transaction systems and understand idempotency, double-entry accounting, and reconciliation at a practical level.

• Experience with multi-currency, multi-country systems is a strong plus, given Misan's footprint across several countries.

• You have led or mentored other engineers, whether formally or as a senior IC. You can review code, unblock people, and hold a technical bar without micromanaging.

• Comfortable owning decisions related to infrastructure such as queues, caching, background job design, and deployment pipelines.

• You understand what compliance-aware engineering means in a regulated fintech (PCI DSS, AML/KYC data handling, audit logging), even if you're not the compliance owner.

• You are a strong communicator who can explain a technical tradeoff to a non-technical stakeholder and write clear RFCs.

• You take full ownership; when something breaks in production, you're the person who runs toward it, not away from it.

• You like building the foundations in a new team, not just working within them.

• You are proficient using git and project management tools: Gitlab, Jira, Notion, FigJam, etc.

• You are known for being a creative problem solver with the attitude that there is no problem that cannot be solved, fixed, or mitigated.
