Senior Project Engineer - $235M Design-Build Student Union (CSULB)

California State University, Long Beach is renovating and expanding its University Student Union, a $235 million project delivered through collaborative design-build, where one team designs and builds the project and works through the design with the University. The project runs from July 2024 to June 2028. It renovates 180,000 gross square feet of the existing building, including 160,000 square feet of indoor space and 20,000 square feet of covered outdoor walkways and seating, and adds 50,000 gross square feet of new space. The building will hold food service, a wellness center, cultural resource centers, a career center, offices, lounges, recreation and entertainment space, and event and meeting rooms, along with accessibility upgrades and site work.

As Senior Project Engineer, you work on site with the University's Design and Construction Services team through preconstruction, construction, and closeout. You run document control for the project, manage the review of design documents by campus stakeholders, review change order requests for merit and fair pricing, and lead the closeout and turnover process, including the project files for the CSU system audit.

What You Will Own

Design, technical, and administrative support through preconstruction, construction, and closeout

Project document control, including plans, meeting minutes, RFIs (requests for information), submittals, change orders, ASIs (architect's supplemental instructions), and schedules

Tracking and filing of documents through design development and permitting

Stakeholder review of design documents, from circulating the documents to collecting, compiling, and vetting the comments and tracking each one until it is addressed

Independent review of change order requests for merit and fair pricing, and preparation of change orders for processing

The closeout and turnover process

Project files for the CSU system audit at project completion

Verification of site conditions and field support as needed

Project meetings, including scheduling, notes, and follow up

Requirements

What You Bring

4 or more years in the construction industry as a project engineer or in a similar role, including major capital projects (required for this role)

The ability to read and understand construction plans (required for this role)

Proficiency with Bluebeam (required for this role)

Excellent communication skills and a professional manner

Availability to work on site at the Long Beach campus, in person only (required for this role)

Design-build experience

Experience with a general contractor on large construction projects of $50 million or more
