Sr. Software Development Engineer

About the role

We’re hiring a Sr. Software Development Engineer (Multiple Open Positions) to build and operate reliable, scalable backend services that power Esper’s device management platform. In this role, you’ll own well-scoped initiatives end-to-end—from design and implementation to production operations—working closely with Product, QA, and customer-facing teams. You’ll also use AI-assisted development tools effectively and safely, including familiarity with agentic AI workflows, to improve engineering productivity. Just as important, you can design, write, and debug code independently, and you use agentic workflows to extend your reach across the full stack so that gaps in any one area don’t slow delivery.

What you'll do

• Develop and maintain backend services and APIs (Python/Go) that support high-volume device management workflows.
• Build and ship intuitive web applications and dashboards (React/TypeScript) used by customers daily.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, QA, and customer-facing teams to deliver customer-focused solutions.
• Contribute to technical design discussions and help make pragmatic architecture decisions.
• Write high-quality code, participate in thorough code reviews, and help improve team standards.
• Work fluidly across the stack, using agentic workflows to extend into areas outside your core strength (for example, a backend-focused engineer shipping production-quality frontend, or the reverse), so skill-set gaps don’t become delivery bottlenecks.

Qualifications

• 4 to 8 years of software development experience

• Experience building and maintaining production systems
• Demonstrated ownership of services in production (operations, incidents, and reliability improvements).
• Strong independent engineering fundamentals: able to design, write, and debug code without AI assistance, and to critically evaluate and correct AI-generated output rather than accept it at face value

Required

• Strong proficiency in Python or Go
• Experience with relational databases and SQL (Postgres preferred)
• Working understanding of system design and distributed systems fundamentals
• Experience with web development frameworks and APIs
• Experience with version control (Git) and modern development workflows
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
• Ability to deliver high-quality code both with and without AI assistance, applying judgment about when AI-assisted or agentic approaches add value and when they don’t
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)

Bonus

• Proficiency in React + TypeScript
• Containerization/orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes
• CI/CD pipeline experience
• Experience with streaming/queues (Kafka/SQS/PubSub)
• Mobile development exposure (Android/iOS)

• Experience with MDM or device management systems
