Consultant Vascular Surgeon

Our client is seeking to appoint a Consultant Vascular Surgeon to join our progressive surgical network. Vascular surgery within the HSE provides critical emergency, acute, and elective services to a broad regional population, supported by multidisciplinary teams in interventional radiology, cardiology, stroke medicine, diabetes care, and specialized nursing.

This post offers an excellent opportunity for an ambitious surgeon to contribute to a modern, high-volume vascular department utilizing state-of-the-art hybrid operating theatres, advanced endovascular suites, and comprehensive non-invasive vascular diagnostic laboratories.

Key Responsibilities

• Surgical Practice: Lead and perform the full spectrum of open and complex endovascular procedures, including aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR/TEVAR), carotid endarterectomy, peripheral arterial revascularization, veno-venous interventions, and hemodialysis access surgery.

• Inpatient & Emergency Care: Deliver daily clinical oversight for vascular inpatients and actively participate in the regional Consultant Vascular Surgery on-call rota for acute emergencies and trauma.

• Outpatient & Diagnostic Clinics: Conduct general and specialized outpatient clinics, collaborating closely with vascular technologists in interpreting non-invasive diagnostic ultrasound and vascular imaging.

• Multidisciplinary Teamwork: Drive and participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, working alongside Interventional Radiologists, Diabetologists, Nephrologists, and Tissue Viability specialists to provide integrated patient management.

• Governance & Service Development: Direct clinical audit, quality assurance, risk management, and service improvement initiatives aimed at optimizing patient outcomes and reducing waiting lists.

• Education & Research: Provide clinical training, mentorship, and formal teaching to surgical trainees (NCHDs), intern medical officers, and university medical students, while fostering clinical research within the department.

Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Requirements

• Professional Registration: Full registration on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland (MCI) in the specialty of Vascular Surgery (or eligibility for immediate registration prior to taking up post).

• Higher Qualification: Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS in Vascular Surgery) or an equivalent higher specialist surgical qualification.

• Surgical Expertise: Broad, demonstrable expertise in both open vascular and advanced endovascular techniques, backed by an established record of surgical competence and clinical safety.

• Compliance & Vetting: Requirement to undergo satisfactory Occupational Health Assessment, Garda Vetting (Police Clearance), and present evidence of continuous professional development (CPD).
