About this role

Service Supervisor

Reporting to the Service Manager, the Service Supervisor serves as an authority within the PW Marine service workshop. This role combines a full hands-on technician workload with a technical leadership function that supports and elevates the performance of the wider service team.

The Service Supervisor is expected to demonstrate the highest standard of technical skill, professional conduct, and commitment to quality in every aspect of their work. They act as a point of guidance and escalation for marine technicians on technical matters, contribute to the ongoing development of the service team, and bring a collaborative and solutions-focused approach to the workshop floor.

A deep passion for the marine industry and a genuine investment in the development of those around them are essential to success in this role.

Summary of Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Technician Support

  • Work closely with the Service Manager to assign daily tasks to the service team.
  • Provide quality oversight and hands on guidance on a needs basis — including when questions arise, issues are identified, or errors occur — to ensure repairs and services meet company and manufacturer standards.
  • Demonstrate best practices in diagnostic and repair techniques, setting the standard for technical excellence on the workshop floor.
  • Support the welcoming and skills development of new and junior technicians.
  • Collaborate with the Service Manager on technical capability planning, including identifying training needs and skills gaps within the service team.
  • Partner with People + Culture to support the identification of prospective marine technician candidates, providing technical insight to inform the recruitment process as directed by the Service Manager.
  • Contribute to the development and ongoing delivery of a marine technician apprenticeship program, supporting the pipeline of future technical talent for the department.

Hands-On Technical Work

  • Carry a full technician workload alongside leadership duties, performing diagnostics, servicing, and repairs across all brands of boats and engines serviced by PW Marine — both in the workshop and at external locations including marinas, boatyards, and on the water.
  • Perform fitting and repair work across all brands of boat and engine, including Mercury, outboards, and MerCruiser engines, transom assemblies, and sterndrive systems.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools and software, including Mercury CDS G3, to accurately identify and address technical faults.
  • Assist with water testing, delivery, and sea trials of vessels as required.
  • Support the preparation and pre-delivery of new outboard motors, inflatable boats, and punts in collaboration with the Sales team.

Workshop Operations

  • Operate across all work environments as required — including the service workshop, customer sites, marinas, boatyards, and on the water.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized work area at all times in compliance with company safety protocols.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely completion of job sheets, including work start and finish times, materials used, parts fitted, and descriptions of work performed.
  • Maintain and care for personal hand tools and any company tools or equipment assigned to this role.
  • Arrange for boats to be trailered to and from the service yard as required.
  • Support Saturday coverage during the Summer Season (April 1 through July 31) as required.

Interdepartmental Collaboration

  • Liaise with the Parts Department and Warehouse to ensure timely supply of parts needed for active jobs.
  • Support the Sales team with technical expertise and product knowledge as required.
  • Collaborate with the Waterfront Marina team as required.
  • Assist other departments during peak or seasonal periods as part of the broader team effort.

Role Expectations

The Service Supervisor is expected to demonstrate a high standard of professionalism, technical excellence, and collaborative leadership at all times. This includes:

  • Adhering to all company safety protocols and operational procedures.
  • Maintaining consistent attendance and punctuality in line with scheduled hours.
  • Supporting seasonal operational demands, including overtime during peak periods when required.
  • Observing the company’s vacation blackout period between May and July, in recognition of the operational demands of the peak season.

  • Representing the company professionally in all interactions with customers, colleagues, and vendors.
  • Wearing the company uniform at all times while on duty.
  • Proactively identifying and raising opportunities to improve workshop efficiency and technical standards.
  • Performing additional duties from time to time as reasonably requested by management.

Professional Development

The Service Supervisor is expected to actively maintain and grow their technical capability in line with evolving marine technologies and manufacturer requirements. Professional development may include:

  • Completion and maintenance of relevant manufacturer certifications (e.g., Mercury, outboards, MerCruiser engines and outboards, Fisher Panda, and other applicable systems).
  • Participation in online and in-person technical training programs.
  • Attendance at company-directed training sessions, delivered either during working hours, after work hours, or off-site as required.
  • Sharing knowledge and learnings with the service team to support collective development.
  • Actively developing leadership and communication skills in support of long-term career progression within the service department.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role involves regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions and physically demanding work within a marine service and yard environment, as well as on the water.

The Lead Technician must be able to:

  • Lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.

This includes situations such as hurricanes and other significant weather events, during which all team members may be expected to support operational needs as required.

  • Demonstrated ability to guide, support, and develop fellow technicians in a collaborative and constructive manner.
  • Clear and professional communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to both colleagues and customers.
