Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, skilled, and dedicated Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine to join our client’s Specialist Geriatric Services (SGS) team on an immediate 3-month contract basis.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to older adults across acute, inpatient, and community-integrated settings. This position is ideal for a consultant seeking an immediate start within a dynamic Health Service Executive (HSE) facility committed to advancing Integrated Care Programme for Older Persons (ICPOP) pathways.

Key Responsibilities

• Clinical Care: Provide consultant-led assessment, diagnosis, and management of complex geriatric syndromes, frailty, and acute medical admissions for older patients.

• Multidisciplinary Leadership: Lead multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, working closely with clinical nurse specialists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, medical social workers, and health and social care professionals (HSCPs).

• ICPOP & Outreach: Collaborate with community specialist teams to facilitate early supported discharge and admission avoidance strategies.

• Service Delivery: Conduct inpatient ward rounds, specialist outpatient clinics (e.g., Memory, Falls, or Frailty Clinics), and provide consultant-on-call cover as per the local rota.

• Clinical Governance: Ensure high standards of quality, patient safety, and clinical audit while adhering to national clinical guidelines

Requirements

Essential Requirements

• IMC Registration: Full registration on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland in Geriatric Medicine (and General Internal Medicine, where applicable).

• Experience: Completed Higher Specialist Training (HST) or equivalent experience in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine.

• Immediate Availability: Ability to commence duties immediately upon appointment and completion of HSE pre-employment checks.

• Skills: Excellent clinical judgment, strong leadership capabilities, and outstanding communication skills across interprofessional teams.

• Compliance: Satisfactory Garda Vetting clearance, occupational health clearance, and standard HSE compliance checks.

Desirable Criteria

• Demonstrated experience in ICPOP or integrated acute-to-community pathways.

• Subspecialty interests in stroke care, movement disorders, orthogeriatrics, or dementia/delirium management.

• Active involvement in clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, or medical education.
